Here we go again! It’s already the 22nd episode of ENGSPRESSO. Let’s see if I can make two more episodes by the end of this year. If so, that will be brilliant because then there will be a total of 24 episodes, which means exactly two episodes a month. If not, we won’t worry about that because I’m going to continue these episodes anyway.

And I hope you have a similar approach to learning English. Remember that if you have a learning schedule or simply some plan, or strategy when it comes to learning English, nothing will happen if you skip one or two weeks. Some of you might think it’s a disaster if you forget to revise your vocabulary or grammar in a certain week, but nothing could be further from the truth! Of course, a schedule helps us to stick to our resolution, but it doesn’t mean that we fail if we take a break from it once in a while. What actually counts is your progress in general and also your ability to keep going no matter what. That’s why here, as you may already have understood, I help you to carry on learning and having fun. We’re in this together, and even if some ENGSPRESSO episodes come with a little delay, we won’t quit, we won’t give up! You have to pinky promise me that!

And now let me teach you another two expressions.

The first one is TO BE / TO DO STH UNDER PRESSURE. If you are under pressure or if you do something under pressure, it means you’re in a difficult situation that makes you feel worried or unhappy. It’s a situation in which someone may force you or expect that you will do something difficult or/and that you will do it quickly.

For instance: It seems that when students are under pressure, they usually manage to meet deadlines. Now, repeat after me.
The translation is: Wydaje się, że gdy studenci są pod presją, zwykle dają radę dotrzymać terminów.

Another example: Show him some understanding – he’s been working under a lot of pressure lately.
Okaż mu trochę zrozumienia – ostatnio pracuje pod ogromną presją.

The second expression is TO DO EVERYTHING IN ONE’S POWER. When you do everything in your power, you simply do everything you can or everything that’s possible.

For instance: We’ve done everything in our power to help these children.
Zrobiliśmy wszystko, co w naszej mocy, aby pomóc tym dzieciom.

Another example: If I hadn’t done everything in my power to save the company, I would regret it now.
Gdybym nie zrobił wszystkiego, co w mojej mocy, aby uratować firmę, teraz bym tego żałował.

Our context for the phrases is:

They were under pressure to deliver the order on time, so they did everything in their power to make it.
Byli pod presją, żeby dostarczyć to zamówienie na czas, więc zrobili, co w ich mocy, aby zdążyć.
